My sister runs a small business, StoryBag[*], that’s doing quite well in the “real world”, but not so well in the virtual. A quick visit to the website on my Flashplayer-less computer reveals a major shortcoming of her website: the menu system is all Flash, so googlebot et al cannot find/index the rest of the site. Looks like her site designers were not really web-savvy, a little surprising (to me) for the mid-noughties.
This has lead me to explore Google’s webmaster stuff (http://www.google.com/webmasters/sitemaps/siteoverview) which is pretty interesting. I’ve sorted her out with a sitemap (.txt since that’s the easiest and the site is pretty static anyway) as a quick work-around for the Flash issue. I’m looking forward to finding out details of pagerank and search terms as the become available, and naturally I’ve added a couple of my own sites as well.
FYI, StoryBags are designed to
- help with oral language development in the home
- encourage dramatic play
- instill a love of language and stories in their children
and they’re fun (we have Incy Wincy Spider and Five in the Bed).
